(Photo courtesy: VDI\/VDE-IT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"a411\" class=\"pv pw oz ln b px py iy pz qa qb jb qc qd qe qf qg qh qi qj qk ql qm qn qo qp gh fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To shape the new Fruit Juice Cluster, we organised an online\u00a0<strong class=\"ln fy\">Supply Chain Dialogue\u00a0<\/strong>for Ugandan fruit juice and fruit wine producers earlier this week. During the workshop, we discussed the reasons why companies in these sectors have difficulties in growing their agribusiness.<\/p>\n<p id=\"09c1\" class=\"pv pw oz ln b px py iy pz qa qb jb qc qd qe qf qg qh qi qj qk ql qm qn qo qp gh fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Among others, we\u2019ve identified the following obstacles for business development and growth and provided solutions based on the clustering approach:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"6f94\" class=\"rd re oz ln b px py qa qb qd rf qh rg ql rh qp ri rj rk rl fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ln fy\">Access to certification<\/strong><br \/>\nCosts for obtaining national certificates in Uganda are high, especially for small fruit juice and fruit wine producers. We plan to initiate a dialogue with national certification bodies to lower barriers for mandatory certification.<\/li>\n<li id=\"aa5c\" class=\"rd re oz ln b px rm qa rn qd ro qh rp ql rq qp ri rj rk rl fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ln fy\">Quality<br \/>\n<\/strong>Fruit juice and wine production processes are complicated and the producers are lacking agricultural knowledge. We plan to organise training and coaching to assure high quality and good taste of the products.<\/li>\n<li id=\"6709\" class=\"rd re oz ln b px rm qa rn qd ro qh rp ql rq qp ri rj rk rl fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ln fy\">Market access<br \/>\n<\/strong>Small fruit juice producers are in heavy competition with larger companies. Branding and engaging in niche markets can assure juice producers to access the market. An improved packaging would help increase customer satisfaction.<\/li>\n<li id=\"919a\" class=\"rd re oz ln b px rm qa rn qd ro qh rp ql rq qp ri rj rk rl fe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ln fy\">Sustainable supply<\/strong><br \/>\nFruit juice and fruit wine producers cannot access the raw material directly, as most of them depend on middlemen. An increased demand for mangoes, pineapples and other fruits would allow negotiation with cooperatives and larger fruit producers, and would assure a direct and more sustainable sourcing.
