Dr. Gerd Meier zu Köcker is the CEO of ClusterAgentur Baden-Württemberg, Project Director of Cluster Observatory Africa and Head of VDI/VDE-IT’s branch in Stuttgart. Gerd’s fields of expertise include cluster development at global level, competitiveness strategies, regional innovation strategies, industrial sectors strategies, value chain analysis and sovereign advisory.

Since 2020, Gerd and his team are managing a EUR 350 Mio. investment fund (Invest BW) to support private sector development in innovation and industrial transformation. Further funds are under his management, too.

Gerd has worked on clusters and regional development for 15 years. His work on policy and scientific level significantly impacted the European and several Member’s States Policy Framework (e. g. Germany, Denmark, Norway). Cluster Excellence, Cluster Benchmarking and the Cluster League Programme approach are some topics he invented and which are the state-of-the-art in cluster development worldwide. In 2011, he initiated ESCA, the European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis, the world’s leading entity in cluster diagnostics and excellence labelling. Gerd leads the Cluster Observatory Africa, but is also developing new cluster initiatives in Africa.

In sector development, Gerd’s activities focus on circular bioeconomy, digital transformation and sustainable development. He is involved in various assignments and initiatives that combine new analytical tools with value chain considerations and public-private initiatives.

Gerd has written widely about the above-mentioned topics, is a frequent speaker on policy forums and has given many guest lectures at universities worldwide. Currently, Gerd is teaching at the University of Applied Science in Kehl. He holds a PhD in Manufacturing Technologies.
